Create an account? Piss off!

Why is it that so many websites require you to jump the login barrier before you can do anything these days?

Try to donate to the NTS so they can carry on their path-building work and you need to create an account first. More and more websites seem to be doing this lately. Christ, a lot of blogs are even requiring a login simply to leave a comment.

Get over yourselves! I don’t want to create, verify and remember another login just to do one thing on your website once!

You’ll probably appreciate the irony then – I had to provide all my details before I could leave a comment on here.
    Bugger.

    Word, WORD, WORD!!!

    (aS THE YOUNGER PEEPS SAY.)

    Oops, with the capslock key…

    Translation: I couldn’t agree more.

Oh, come off it, John. A name and an email address isn’t asking a lot. I’m not verifying the email address and making you select and remember yet another password and all the rest of it. More to the point, you don’t need to give me a functioning email address to comment if you don’t want to.

It took forever to get from mailing lists to RSS and now I find I’m still having to hand out an email address left, right and centre. Imagine what a pain it would be if everyone did it.

PS – do you think Peewiglet is agreeing with you or me? :O)

PW – both of course – safest way
    😉

Not having a pop – just saw the funny side of it really

  5. Gordy Says:

    Fair enough. :O)

Fair play to the NTS btw. They got in touch this afternoon to say they’re looking to change their website to get rid of this problem.

Personally, I think the irony is that you’re calling yourself “Mad Jim” on your own website.

    :0D

    BugMeNot can be useful: http://www.bugmenot.com/

I use the Firefox extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6349

Oops! In fact I was agreeing with Gordy 🙂 I didn’t see John’s post when I sent mine.

I’ve come across that a lot recently i.e. having to subscribe to sites in order to follow simple links. I almost always turn away. Grrr…

  9. Gordy Says:

Aye, BugMeNot is very handy sometimes. Not much use for wee blogs here and there though. Certainly no good when you’re just trying to quickly bung the NTS a tenner.

Hah! Is that as bad as or worse than having a secret website?

    ;O)

  11. Scott Says:

    D’oh!

The “secret website” has now been upgraded to “social experiment” status. There’s more legroom, reclining seats and free champers, but the pilot’s still only on a provisional licence.
